Q&A: Kirk

What’s your role at 5 & Rise, and how do you contribute to the team’s success?
My role at 5 & Rise is as our Paid Media Manager. I work with clients on their digital ads and help to curate the best product to bring awareness and leads for their products.

What inspired you to pursue a career in marketing/advertising?
I enjoyed the crossover of creative work and the business world. After taking my first marketing course in college, I knew it was the career for me and haven’t looked back.

How do you stay updated with the latest industry trends?
I love the newsletter/social media account Marketing Brew. They always provide interesting trends and food for thought that I can bring to the table in our client work.

What tools or apps are essential to your daily work?
Meta Ads Manager and Google Ads Manager are my daily bread and butter. Canva is essential for creating creative for ads and Click Up is essential for organization throughout the whole team.

What’s one industry trend you’re excited about right now?
It feels like marketing moving towards a less transactional-based model and moving back to an environment that values companies and their personal touches. That gets me excited to see what companies do matters more and that can be showcased for more effect.

What’s been the biggest change in the industry since you started your career?
I started my marketing career at a television station trying to bridge the gap between traditional media promotion and digital promotion. To me, it has become apparent that using traditional media like broadcast TV and radio for smaller, local companies no longer provides useful ROI and does not feel like a viable option in the current climate.

If you could solve one major industry challenge, what would it be?
I love the tools that are now available to us as marketers with the ever-adapting AI technologies entering the industry, but I do feel like large companies like Meta and Google are too reliant on AI to provide safeguards on ads. It leads to drawn-out processes to publish and promote products and having authentic eyes look at the problems we face often takes too long and causes clients to lose out on valuable time to bring in leads and awareness.

What’s your favorite way to start the morning before diving into work?
A large cup of coffee is essential for me before I leave the house. It gives me a chance to take a moment, pet my dogs, and prepare myself for what is in store for that day.

If you had an extra hour of free time every day, how would you use it?
As simple as it sounds, I would use it to sit outside or go on walks around my neighborhood with my wife and dogs. When the weather is nice there is nothing more relaxing and enjoyable for me than appreciating the outdoors, having random conversation with her, and taking a moment to not worry about everything happening outside of that time of relative solitude.

What’s one destination you’ve always wanted to visit, and why?
I recently was able to visit the place that it would’ve been, which is Rome. I love history and the Roman Empire is one of the most frequently talked about subjects in history. But now I would have to choose either Greece or Egypt. The ancient historical importance of both is incredible and they provide so many interesting things to do for someone who prefers to visit old places as opposed to sitting on a beach for vacation.

What’s your go-to comfort food?
I love Mexican cuisine. There has never been a time in my life where I’ve turned down the opportunity for good conversation and a chance to go to a Mexican restaurant.

Do you have any pets? Can you share a funny or endearing story about them?
I have two rescue pups, Bo and Leo. An interesting fact about Leo was that he escaped the backyard the first night we brought him home, but he only made it as far as the house across the street before he decided he wanted to come back.

If you had to choose only three apps to have on your phone, which ones would they be?
Assuming that Calls and Messages are not included, it would be Google, YouTube, and NYT Games.

Describe your perfect day off. What does it look like from morning to night?
My ideal day would start off with going with Marisa to grab a coffee and take a long walk. I would follow that up with inviting some friends over to make some great food and grill and just enjoy the company of those we love to be around. Then we would go to our favorite date night spot, an Italian restaurant in our neighborhood, to have some fantastic food and wine. Then I would end the night with one of our favorite movies like Lord of the Rings or Interstellar and a good dessert of some kind.
